Over the last few months of 2023, State Governors and Administrators around Australia hosted receptions for students selected to participate in the 2024 NYSF Year 12 Program. These events allow students to celebrate their selection with their fellow NYSF participants, Student Staff Leaders, Rotary guests, and members of the NYSF Staff. We thank the Governors of Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania, and South Australia and the Northern Territory Administrator for supporting the students and the NYSF Year 12 Program.
"I started my career as a research pharmacologist before working as a rural generalist practitioner for 20 years. So, the study of science is close to my heart and I know from my own experience and career all the ways that science can help people, communities and the environment, and to save lives. So, I encourage you to keep studying science! The world, the Northern Territory and our communities need scientists, and at this strange time in history when there seems to be an attack on truth and evidence, we need more than ever people who speak to and confirm scientific evidence, on which we can make policies and decisions." – His Honour Professor the Honourable Hugh Heggie PSM.
"As Governor, nothing brings me greater joy than to see and hear of young Queenslanders looking to the future through the lens of the sciences. A passion for science, technology, engineering and maths can very clearly translate into a career that reaps great rewards." – Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM. "As you head into Year 12, this is an exciting time to be on the threshold of a science, maths, or engineering career. Using your upcoming summer break to further explore what possibilities are ahead for you will be fun and I hope transformative. South Australia is a great place to be now, as we develop tomorrow’s industries in space, cyber security, engineering, defence, medicine, AI, renewable energy, and other areas. Our scientists are already making great advances, bui lding on our proud history of world-class scientific innovation, excellence, and discovery. Now more than ever we need to support our next generation of scientists to meet a STEM skills shortage throughout Australia." – Her Excellency, the Honourable Frances Adamson AC.
The NYSF would like to thank everyone who attended these events, including NYSF participants and their families, Student Staff Leaders, Rotary representatives, and invited guests. The Governors' Receptions allow students to meet each other before attending the NYSF Year 12 Program in January, and to share their passion for science with the Governors and guests. Thank you to our hosts for assisting in organising these events, and making the day special for NYSF participants.
